Discover Stella at Star Metal District: The Jewel of Atlanta's Westside Urban-Renewal Project

Atlanta | West Midtown

Atlanta has experienced continuous growth and prosperity, earning it the nickname "Empire State of the South." While the city's downtown area used to be a typical nine-to-five neighborhood with limited activity outside of business hours, it has undergone significant transformation thanks to the visionary leadership of Andrew Young during his mayoralty in the early 1980s.

Efforts to enhance Atlanta's urban appeal have resulted in the construction of impressive luxury high-rise residential buildings located just north of downtown and along the famous Peachtree Street corridor. Additionally, a vibrant district known as the Westside has emerged, resembling a lively "SoHo along the Chattahoochee." This area, once dominated by meat-packing facilities, has now been revitalized to feature modern lofts, art galleries, fashionable restaurants, and trendy retail establishments. These developments have contributed to Atlanta's urbanization and added a dynamic flair to the city's overall character.

Stella at Star Metals District

Stella, the third phase of the Star Metals District’s $500 million project, is an integral part of Atlanta's Westside urban-renewal. With its 327 high-quality class AA+ apartments , Stella joins the previously completed phases, Star Metals Offices with 270,000 square feet of office space, and Sentral at Star Metals with 409 residences.

In addition to its luxurious apartments, Stella will provide a vibrant retail experience on its ground floor, spanning 25,000 square feet. Notable dining establishments like Grass Fed Culture and Fishmonger, both recognized with Michelin awards, will anchor the retail space, along with a captivating two-story bar on the 17th floor. The tower itself will incorporate rolling green roofs and terraced gardens, adding to its aesthetic appeal.

Residents of Stella will enjoy a range of outstanding amenities, including a seventh-floor infinity pool accompanied by private cabanas, an indoor-outdoor gym, a theater-style screening room, and more. These features contribute to creating a remarkable living experience within the community.

Vertical Elevation

“You can’t grow horizontally forever,” says Spencer Morris, chief investment officer and executive vice president of Allen Morris, a development company founded by his grandfather. “At some point you have to grow vertically.” Morris is putting his company’s money where his mouth is—investing heavily in Atlanta’s Westside with a new stand-alone multi-use development called Star Metals, that just broke ground after securing a $100 million construction loan.

“Historically, this was the meat-packing center of Atlanta,” Morris explains. “There were slaughterhouses everywhere. Then the neighborhood evolved into textile mills, which existed up until about the 1970s. Then, in the 1990s, a place called Westside Provisions opened, and that was the beginning of the neighborhood as a food destination for all of Atlanta.” The neighborhood is also known as West Midtown.

History of West Midtown

The Howell Mill Road area, located west of Atlanta's midtown, has a rich history as the former hub of the city's stockyards and meatpacking district. However, over time, the area faced disinvestment and neglect until the 1990s when a revitalization took place. This rejuvenation was sparked by the arrival of upscale restaurants and boutiques, which saw the potential in the neighborhood.

Drawing inspiration from the area's past, these new establishments cleverly incorporated meat industry references into their names and themes. Notable examples include the Abattoir restaurant, White Provisions, and Star Provisions. These businesses became the anchors of the district, which underwent a rebranding as the Westside Provisions District.

Through this transformation, the Howell Mill Road area successfully melded its historical significance with modern upscale offerings, breathing new life into the district and attracting visitors who appreciate the unique blend of the neighborhood's past and present.
