Robert Smith is a billionaire philanthropist and businessman who has made a significant impact in the tech industry. He is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm that specializes in investing in software companies. Smith is known for his strategic business moves and his dedication to giving back to his community.

Born in Colorado in 1962, Smith grew up in a middle-class family and attended Cornell University where he earned a degree in chemical engineering. After graduating, he worked for several tech companies before earning an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1994.

In 2000, Smith founded Vista Equity Partners and quickly made a name for himself in the tech industry. His firm has since become one of the most successful in the industry, managing over $73 billion in assets and completing over 450 deals. Vista Equity Partners' portfolio includes companies such as Ping Identity, Apptio, and Marketo.

Aside from his successful business career, Smith is also a well-known philanthropist. In 2016, he made headlines for donating $20 million to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. This donation was the largest individual donation to the museum at the time. Smith has also pledged to pay off the $34M in student loan debt of the entire 2019 graduating class of Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Smith has also been recognized for his contributions to the business world. In 2020, he was named the "Executive of the Year" by Black Enterprise magazine and was also included in Forbes' list of the 100 Greatest Living Business Minds.
