The 2025 Met Gala: A Celebration of Black Dandyism and the Impact on Luxury Fashion

The co-chairs for the Met Gala include Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky

The fashion world is abuzz with excitement as the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute unveils its theme for the 2025 exhibition: "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." This groundbreaking showcase promises to explore the rich history and cultural significance of Black dandyism, marking a pivotal moment in the intersection of Black culture and luxury fashion.

The exhibition, inspired by Monica L. Miller's book "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity," will be the first since 2003 to focus solely on menswear. This shift represents a significant step towards diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry, particularly in the realm of high-end luxury.

The exhibit will be the first since 2003 that is focused solely on menswear, and stars like Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Lewis Hamilton will support the event by serving as Met Gala co-chairs. NBA legend LeBron James will serve as an honorary co-chair.  This selection of co-chairs for the 2025 Met Gala is generating palpable excitement in the fashion world.

Here’s why

A$AP Rocky has always artfully pushed boundaries with fashion influence with undeniable cultural relevance. Known for his bold style, he masterfully merges streetwear and high fashion, collaborating with renowned designers like Dior and Raf Simons, and shaping trends across the industry. Earlier this year A$AP just made his Paris Fashion Week debut with his first full @awgenization collection titled, ‘AMERICAN SABOTAGE.’ His presence as co-chair would enhance the event's ongoing effort to diversify its representation, bringing a fresh perspective from the Black and hip-hop communities.

Lewis Hamilton, a longtime Met Gala attendee, has not only showcased his athletic prowess in Formula 1 but has also injected new life into the sport by breaking down barriers in the traditionally exclusive racing world. In recent years, he has emerged as a major fashion figure, frequently attending fashion weeks, collaborating with brands like Tommy Hilfiger, and embracing bold, experimental looks. His interest in sustainable and ethical fashion aligns with the Met Gala’s evolving focus on conscious design. His ability to blend high fashion with activism makes him an impactful and relevant figure to co-chair an event like the Met Gala, which celebrates the intersection of fashion, culture, and social commentary.

Colman Domingo, the first Afro-Latino co-chair of the Met Gala rapidly ascending as one of Hollywood's most stylish stars, brings fresh energy after his Met Gala debut this year. Domingo is coming off a banner year where he was nominated for an Academy Award for his critically acclaimed role as civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the biopic Rustin. He also made waves at last year’s Met Gala, with a look that was widely regarded as one of the year’s best. The actor is also set to play Michael Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson, in an upcoming biopic about the singer.

Pharrell Williams' appointment as co-chair is particularly fitting, given his current role as creative director at Louis Vuitton. His influence on hip-hop style has been transformative, with his innovative ensembles consistently pushing boundaries and redefining fashion. Williams has consistently made waves in the fashion world with numerous standout moments that have shaped his style legacy.

From making headlines with his oversized Vivienne Westwood "Buffalo" hat at the Grammys to his collaboration with Adidas on the "Hu" sneaker line, Pharrell has consistently pushed the boundaries of fashion. His 2019 Chanel x Pharrell capsule collection, featuring bold, streetwear-inspired pieces, further demonstrated his talent for blending urban culture with high fashion, proving his versatility and influence across both luxury and culture.

Pharrell’s unique style—whether sporting pearl necklaces, gender-fluid looks, or avant-garde tailoring—has made him a fashion icon, continuously reshaping the boundaries of what’s considered fashionable in both streetwear and luxury spaces. These fashion moments, combined with his creative leadership, make him an ideal Met Gala co-chair, representing the convergence of style, music, and culture.

This will mark Williams' sixth Met Gala appearance and second time as co-chair, underscoring his significant impact on the intersection of music, high fashion, streetwear, and luxury.

The addition of LeBron James as honorary co-chair further elevates the event's prestige as his bold style choices both on and off the court have influenced trends and bridged the gap between sports and high fashion. James' involvement brings a unique perspective, combining athletic excellence with a keen fashion sense, and represents the growing influence of athletes in the luxury fashion space. His presence as honorary co-chair acknowledges the important role sports figures play in shaping contemporary style and culture, making him an excellent choice for an exhibition celebrating Black dandyism and its impact on fashion history.

Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute's Curator in Charge, emphasizes the importance of this exhibition:

"I feel that the show itself marks a really important step in our commitment to diversifying our exhibitions and collections, as well as redressing some of the historical biases within our curatorial practice. It's very much about making fashion at The Met more of a gateway to access and inclusivity[1]."

The Power of Black Dandyism

The theme delves deep into the historical and cultural emergence of the Black Dandy, tracing its evolution from 18th-century art to contemporary fashion shows and cinema. This exploration highlights how Black people have used fashion as a tool for self-expression, identity formation, and challenging societal norms.

Monica Miller, guest curator and author of the book that inspired the exhibition, offers a powerful perspective on Black dandyism:

"Black dandyism is a strategy and tool to assert identity, reimagine the self in a hostile context. It's a push to—especially at the time—advance the argument to really expand the boundary of who and what counts as human, even."

Impact on Luxury Fashion

This theme signifies a monumental shift in the luxury fashion landscape. By placing Black style and tailoring at the forefront of one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world, the Met Gala is acknowledging the immense influence Black culture has had on high-end fashion.

The selection of co-chairs further emphasizes this impact. Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky—all known for their distinctive styles—will serve alongside Anna Wintour. Their involvement underscores the growing recognition of Black men as trendsetters in the luxury fashion sphere.

Andrew Bolton notes:

"They are all men who aren't afraid to take risks with their self-presentation. They utilize classic forms but also remix and reimagine them in innovative ways. I think Black men and Black designers are at the forefront of this new renaissance in menswear."

A Cultural Milestone

The 2025 Met Gala theme is more than just a fashion statement; it's a cultural milestone. By celebrating Black dandyism, the exhibition challenges historical narratives and showcases the profound impact of Black style on global fashion trends.

One thing is certain: the 2025 Met Gala will be a powerful celebration of Black creativity, resilience, and style, forever changing the landscape of luxury fashion.

The 2025 Met Gala will take place May 5.

There’s a reason the Met Gala is colloquially referred to as “the first Monday in May.” Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute usually stick to this schedule, hosting their fundraising gala on the first Monday of May each year. For 2025, this means the event will take place on May 5. Mark your calendars.

The museum exhibit will be available to view through October 26.

Right after the 2025 Met Gala takes place, the coinciding fashion exhibit will open for public viewing the following day. According to Vogue, the collection will be available to peruse May 6 through October 26, 2025.
